“… we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done.
…so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.”
Psalm 78: 4, 6
We know that children learn from our example. Some of the qualities we hope to instill in them are: honesty, trustworthiness, kindness, good work ethics and so much more. Most of us strive to show our children the importance of these kinds of characteristics. We do this in the example we set in our lives, by talking to them about right and wrong and by encouraging them to make good choices.
As we nurture and guide our children, the words from Psalm 78 remind us that we, most importantly, should be telling them about God. We are to talk about His greatness, praise Him for His goodness and share about all that He has done in our lives. When sharing about God’s love becomes a natural way of life, the next generation will know Him. They in turn will know how to share with their children and as the psalmist says “even the children yet to be born.”
Instilling the love of God in our children and grandchildren is a wonderful legacy to leave them. It is a legacy that no one can take from them and will be carried on for generations to come!
