History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Denomination

The Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized in Dickson County Tennessee, February 4, 1810. It was an outgrowth of the Great Revival of 1800.  The founders of the church were Finis Ewing, Samuel King, and Samuel McAdow. These three men were ministers in the Presbyterian Church of that time. These and others rejected some of the doctrine of the Presbyterian Church. Ewing, King and McAdow met together to pray for guidance and to consider what should be done about the differences in beliefs. After a night of prayer, the answer was clear — The Cumberland Presbyterian Denomination was born.

The first churches established were in and around the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee, but the new denomination grew rapidly and today there are Cumberland Presbyterian Churches all over the United States, as well as in many countries around the world.

Our beliefs are simple and are often referred to as a “whosoever will" doctrine. Cumberland Presbyterians believe the Bible is the infallible word of God, that salvation is for everybody, that Jesus died for sinners and anyone can and will be saved if they confess Christ as their Savior.

(More details of the doctrine and beliefs can be found in the Cumberland Presbyterian Confession of Faith.)

East Point Cumberland Presbyterian Church is one of several CP churches in Cullman County. Our church was organized on May 22, 1921 by Rev. T.E. Bright. The church first met in the Grassy Branch Schoolhouse. Later, the present building was constructed by men in the community who used rocks hauled by wagon from the nearby rock quarry.

Although the building has be renovated and additions have been made through the years, the original rock church still stands and is the central part of the church.

East Point CP Church strives to continue to be a light in our community. We reach out in many ways to help our neighbors and show the love of God to others.

In addition to Sunday morning worship services, we offer Sunday School and Bible Study classes for all ages. Our Women’s Ministry  (CPWM) is very active in many outreach projects and our church supports a free food pantry to anyone in need.

East Point CP Church is a welcoming, loving, praying congregation. We have been dubbed “the little church with the big heart”.
