“And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:19
Elijah was a mighty prophet who spoke faithfully the words that God gave him. But Elijah was not immune to trouble. Once when there was a famine in the land, God directed Elijah to hide in a ravine where there would be water for him to drink and where God sent ravens to bring him food each morning and each evening. When the stream finally dried up, God directed Elijah to a certain town. There he met a widow who was on the verge of starvation. When Elijah asked for a drink of water and some bread, she told him that she was gathering sticks to prepare a last meal for herself and her son. Elijah told her that God would not let their supplies run out and sure enough the flour jar never became empty and the oil jug never ran dry! (1 Kings 17)
Another time when Elijah was running for his life from wicked Jezebel, he was so tired and weak that he laid down and prayed to die! But God sent and an angel with food, water and encouragement. Elijah was revived and was able to continue on his journey to safety. (1 Kings 19)
All of the needs for Elijah, the widow and her son were supplied by God. He saw their need and He provided more than they hoped for. Elijah needed safety, nourishment, and encouragement. Things that Elijah could not obtained on his own, but God met his physical needs in unexpected ways and this gave Elijah hope, courage and a will to keep going.
The widow was planning just one last meal and then expected to die, but God supplied her physical needs of flour and oil for as long as the famine lasted. The Bible says she and her family and Elijah had food for everyday. God not only gave them food for their bodies, He also encouraged their spirit and faith as each day their needs were met.
How does God meet our needs today? How often does He supply a need that seems impossible for us? How often does He encourage us, strengthen us and renew our faith in unexpected ways? His power is limitless. His love is boundless. His blessings are endless. Through Christ Jesus our needs are met in glorious unexpected ways!
