“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

Psalm 118:24

Psalm 118:24 is a very familiar scripture that has been read, repeated  and put to music numerous times. We see it imprinted on signs, cups and even clothing.

But, do we really put thought into what we are saying when we recite this verse from memory? Yes, it’s easy to be joyful and happy when things are going our way; when problems seem far away.

But what about those days when it seems that everything is going wrong? Days when our plans do not work out? Those days when it seems that trouble is following us wherever we go? Maybe we are sad or lonely, hurt or confused. Does God really expect us to “rejoice and be glad”on those days too?

Yes, He does!  Especially on those bad days! God knows that rejoicing and praising Him will lift our spirit; it fills us with joy to worship our Lord. When we repeat the psalmist words and meditate on them we are reminded that God is control of all our days — good or bad. Each new day is a new beginning that God has prepared for us. We can rejoice and be glad because we know without a doubt that whatever the day brings God is with us and will help us.

“His mercies are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22) and for that we rejoice and are glad!
