I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
Psalm 122:1
“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another — and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
Hebrews 10:25
Scripture in both the Old and New Testaments encourages God’s people to be a part of a body of believers. The book of Acts records how early believers joined together for worship, meals and fellowship. They helped and encouraged each other by sharing and making sure everyone’s needs were met. Acts 2:47 says they spent time “praising God and enjoying the favor of all people. And the Lord added to their number daily…”
These early Christians knew the importance of being with like-minded people. Not only did their numbers grow, but through their fellowship faith, knowledge, love of God and love for each other grew stronger too.
Today’s churches are a little different, we don’t always have all things in common and we don’t spend as much time together as did those first Christians. But we still enjoy fellowship with each other. When we attend and participate in church services we grow in our faith and knowledge of the Lord. We support and lift each other up through prayers. Our children are nurtured and taught about God’s love. We have an outlet for service to others. We have a family of Godly people that love us. And most importantly, we grow closer to God.
So let us get rid of anything that hinders us from being in church and let us join with the psalmist and rejoice to spend time in the house of the Lord.
