“As the rain and snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, … so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
Isaiah 55:10-11
God’s word is powerful. Hebrews 4:12 calls it a sharp two-edged sword and says it is “living and active”. In Ephesians 6 God’s word is also described as a sword that we can use to fight off the devil.
In today’s scripture we hear that God likens His word to rain or snow that comes down to water the earth. If you have ever planted a garden you know how important it is to get enough hydration. Without the snows of winter, spring trees and flowers would not have enough moisture to bud and bloom. Without the rains, crops would dry up and die. The water is what keeps things alive and growing.
As we think of God’s word, we know that it is sometimes cuttings as we are convicted of our wrong doings. It is sometimes protective as we remember verses that keep us safe and grounded in Christ and it is sometimes nourishing as it helps us stand and grow in our faith.
God promises that His word will always accomplish the purpose for which He sends it. When we speak His word and believe it, we can be sure that things will happen according to His plan.
