“… my cup overflows.”

Psalm 23:5

It is said that during the time of David, the writer of Psalm 23, that the fullness of one’s cup was indicative of the host’s enjoyment of the guest’s company.

If a guest’s cup was empty and not refilled, it meant that the host was ready for the guest to leave. If a guest’s cup was keep full it meant that the host was enjoying the company and wanted to continue  the visit.  But if the guest’s cup was filled to overflowing it indicated that the host was overjoyed with this guest and wanted them to stay even longer.

Think about how God pours His blessings out on us. As God’s children our lives overflow with His blessings. We notice things like good health, plenty of food, a comfortable home, a loving family, a restful vacation, and many more. But, what about the small, everyday things — a warm sunshiny day, a refreshing rain, a beautiful rainbow, a good night’s sleep, a phone call from a friend or a smile from a sweet child. All of these are blessings too.

As God pours out His love on us, could He, like the hosts in ancient days,  be saying “Hey, I want you to stay with me, I like spending time with you.”

What an awesome thought that is! God  blesses us beyond anything we could ask or imagine  (Ephesians 3:20) and He wants us to draw near to Him so we can be blessed even more!

What a wonderful and loving Father we serve. Our cups truly do overflow with His love.
