It’s valentine weekend! Many have given and received cards, gifts, flowers and exchanged sweet words in the name of love. It is wonderful to have a special someone in your life that cares deeply for you, one on which you can depend and trust. Too many times though our love is short-lived. We may speak those three little words to another, just to have our hearts broken when they do not feel the same way. Sometimes what we call love can not stand the test of time, sometimes it is just emotions.
The Bible has much to say about love. First of all it tells us that God is love. God’s whole being is love. We can hardly wrap our minds around such a concept! But we can believe it. All that God does for us is out of His love for us. He sent Jesus to die for our sins, John 3:16. John 15:13 tells us that there is no greater love than this. Jeremiah 31:3 tells us that God’s love is everlasting, He won’t change His mind about us when someone better comes along. We can depend on His love to last forever. Then, of course,
1 Corinthians 13 is known as the love chapter. Here we have a description of what Godly love for others should be. It ends with “… faith, hope and love. But the greatest is love”.
If God has put so much emphasis on love, shouldn’t we also try to show His love? As God’s children shouldn’t we do our best to reflect His care and compassion in our interactions with others? In all our relationships, romantic or otherwise, shouldn’t God’s love be the foundation on which we build? Shouldn’t we be dependable, trustworthy and kind to those we say we care about?
When we are filled with God’s love and guided by it, it will overflow into our everyday relationships. Others will see it and they too may come to understand that the GREAT GOD OF THE UNIVERSE IS LOVE!
