“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those that hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of God.

Blessed are those that are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Matthew 5:3-12

In Jesus’ well-known sermon on the mount He gives some very encouraging words. Each verse references a common human weakness, hurt or trial. Although things may seem hard to bear at the time, Jesus promises blessings and happiness in the end.

When googled the word “blessed” is defined as divinely favored, happy, prosperous or consecrated to God. These words from Matthew 5 remind us that whatever state we may be in — happy, sad, weak, hungry, poor, loved, rejected or ridiculed the end result will be worth it all. Jesus sees our suffering, He knows we are trying to live right, He understands our weaknesses and tells us to “rejoice and be glad for great is our reward in heaven.”
