“He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Micah 6:8

Everywhere we look, in all that we do, there are requirements.  We are required to have a license to drive a vehicle. In order to receive a diploma we are required to complete a course of study. To get a job, we must meet requirements. To get a loan, rent an apartment, even join a club or civic organization we must meet the requirements.

Most requirements are for good and help to maintain standards and ensure quality and safety. For example, we would not want an untrained person working on our vehicle or a doctor performing surgery without meeting the requirements to qualify for such skills.

The Israelites of old had many requirements for their people to follow. Their worship of God required  such things as burnt offerings, prayers and fasting at times. They became more concerned with meeting the requirements than truly worshipping.

God broke it down for them though, by asking the question, “What does the Lord require of you?”  The answer is simple. God requires His children to be fair and just and merciful and walk humbly with Him.  (Life Application Bible) Jesus said it another way “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind…And love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:27-39.
