“Put on the full armor God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”

Ephesians 6:11

Veterans Day will be celebrated in various ways this week. There may be parades, songs, speeches or we may simply tell a Vet thank you for their service. Because of their sacrifices and courage we can enjoy life with freedoms and privileges that many others do not know. We owe a debt of gratitude to every person that has served our country.

In the Bible we read that we are all in a battle against evil. We are faced with struggles daily and Paul refers to Christians as “soldiers of Christ Jesus” in 2 Timothy 2:3.

Just as those in the armed forces must prepare for battle, we too must be ready to fight against the “schemes of the devil”. Our training is being grounded in the Word of God, standing firm in His power and putting on the “full armor of God”.

What is this armor? Verses 14 - 18 explains this a little more. We are to wrap ourselves with His truths, keep His righteousness in our hearts, always be ready to share His peace, let our faith in God shield/protect us, know that we have salvation through Jesus Christ and be grounded in the Word of God so that we can speak it readily. Last of all we are to pray on all occasions.

So as we give veterans the honor and thanks they deserve this week, let us also remember that just as they trained for their service, we too must be prepared for ours. We are called to put on the whole armor of God and stand ready when we are called to fight the fight against the evils of this world. With God’s help we will be victorious!
