“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things.”
Philippians 4:8
We need to be careful what we feed our minds. In this scripture, Paul encourages the people of Philippi to guard their minds by thinking about those things that are true and honest, right, worthwhile, and pure. He told them to focus on the admirable things that others do and praise the wonderful things that God does.
There is much in our lives today that can enter our minds and thoughts that are the exact opposite of all of that Paul mentioned. The evening news, the internet, the movies we watch, the books we read can all contain violence, hatred and unwholesome ideas. We cannot dwell on these things and we cannot feed them to our minds! When we do, our minds can become filled with worry, fear and doubt. We, like the Philippians, have to make a conscious effort to feed our mind good things.
We cannot shield ourselves from all the bad in the world, but we can make sure that we read our Bibles, pray and keep our minds focused on the goodness of God. We can focus on truth and right and keep our minds pure from unwholesome things. When we do that, we can have joy, peace and assurance.
